In fact, we found in a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lexingtonlaw.com\/blog\/news\/american-savings-poll.html\" target=\"_blank\">previous survey<\/a> that most Americans don\u2019t have a savings goal and two in five have less than $1,000 in savings. In another study, we learned that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lexingtonlaw.com\/blog\/news\/investment-literacy-survey.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">most Americans could not pass a basic financial literacy quiz<\/a>.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Americans\u2019 lack of financial knowledge often translates to poor financial habits. It makes you wonder how things might turn out if Americans start learning about money earlier, like when they start earning an allowance.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Allowances are one of the first times that most Americans probably handle their own money, so how much do they really help? We surveyed 2,000 Americans to see if they thought allowances make a difference and when kids should start earning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-key-findings\">Key Findings:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>More than 1 in 4 Americans<\/strong> believe kids shouldn\u2019t get an allowance<\/li><li><strong>Nearly three-quarters<\/strong> of Americans believe getting an allowance teaches kids about money management<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-more-than-a-quarter-of-americans-are-anti-allowance\">More Than a Quarter of Americans are Anti-Allowance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Twenty-eight percent of Americans we surveyed weren\u2019t fond of the idea of giving kids allowances at all. This attitude may reflect in the total allowance kids receive. A recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/kids-allowance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Finder<\/a> survey found that kids receive an average of $17 a week for allowance.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1500\" height=\"680\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lexingtonlaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/americans-allowance.png\" alt=\"28 percent of Americans don't think kids should get an allowance\" class=\"wp-image-13210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lexingtonlaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/americans-allowance.png 1500w, https:\/\/www.lexingtonlaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/americans-allowance-1100x499.png 1100w, https:\/\/www.lexingtonlaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/americans-allowance-768x348.png 768w, https:\/\/www.lexingtonlaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/americans-allowance-600x272.png 600w, https:\/\/www.lexingtonlaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/americans-allowance-300x136.png 300w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 767px) 600px, calc(100vw - 35px)\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Regardless, many more Americans are still pro-allowance. However, the age kids should start receiving an allowance is where opinions differ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-most-americans-still-believe-in-allowances-but-can-t-agree-on-when-to-start\">Most Americans Still Believe in Allowances, but Can\u2019t Agree on When to Start<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Americans have different opinions about when kids should receive allowances. In our findings, close to 17 percent of respondents felt that kids should start getting an allowance as early as age five or six. A handful of studies actually agree with the idea of starting earlier rather than later.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A study published in the <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/joca.12062\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Journal of Consumer Affairs<\/a> finds that kids are capable of learning about savings as early as age five. The study also found children who grew up with a savings account were more likely to accumulate more savings and other things as young adults.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1501\" height=\"731\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lexingtonlaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/age-kids-should-get-allowance.png\" alt=\"Graphic that illustrates what age kids should start getting an allowance\" class=\"wp-image-13211\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lexingtonlaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/age-kids-should-get-allowance.png 1501w, https:\/\/www.lexingtonlaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/age-kids-should-get-allowance-1100x536.png 1100w, https:\/\/www.lexingtonlaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/age-kids-should-get-allowance-768x374.png 768w, https:\/\/www.lexingtonlaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/age-kids-should-get-allowance-600x292.png 600w, https:\/\/www.lexingtonlaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/age-kids-should-get-allowance-300x146.png 300w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 767px) 600px, calc(100vw - 35px)\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2018\/11\/181127092523.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Science Daily<\/a> reported on a study published in the Journal of Family Issues that recommends teaching kids about money management at a younger age when stakes are lower. This study found that early learning helps kids develop good financial habits before living on their own.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite having split feelings about when they should start, many Americans believe that allowances are a viable way to teach money management to kids.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-most-americans-believe-in-allowance-as-a-teaching-tool\">Most Americans Believe in Allowance as a Teaching Tool<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sixty-four percent of Americans all agree that allowances teach kids about money. However, experts agree that giving allowance alone isn\u2019t enough to fully teach kids about money. Kids need guidance to understand bigger concepts like saving and spending.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/family\/archive\/2018\/12\/allowance-kids-chores-help\/578848\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">the Atlantic<\/a>, Arizona State University psychologist Suniya Luther isn\u2019t opposed to allowance but says that kids should understand that certain chores should be done because it keeps the household running and not solely because they\u2019ll receive a payment.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1500\" height=\"680\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lexingtonlaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/allowance-money-management.png\" alt=\"does getting an allowance as a child teach children about money management\" class=\"wp-image-13212\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lexingtonlaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/allowance-money-management.png 1500w, https:\/\/www.lexingtonlaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/allowance-money-management-1100x499.png 1100w, https:\/\/www.lexingtonlaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/allowance-money-management-768x348.png 768w, https:\/\/www.lexingtonlaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/allowance-money-management-600x272.png 600w, https:\/\/www.lexingtonlaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/allowance-money-management-300x136.png 300w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 767px) 600px, calc(100vw - 35px)\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Robert Gauvreau, CPA and partner at Gauvreau and Associates says allowances are a great tool to introduce finances, but we need to take the steps necessary to effectively teach children.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have to go above just providing an allowance and help them understand how the entire spectrum of finances work, how things could go wrong, and how best to prepare for their financial futures,\u201d he said.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A few things he recommends include:<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Educate them about how money is earned<\/strong> through a job and how there are government obligations such as taxes that need to be paid from that money.<\/li><li><strong>Introduce the idea of making financial decisions<\/strong> such as retirement savings or saving for a home renovation and the importance of saving first before committing to financial obligations.<\/li><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lexingtonlaw.com\/credit\/what-is-credit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Understand credit<\/a> <\/strong>(credit cards, loans, student debt, etc.).<\/li><li><strong>Discuss high-dollar items<\/strong>, how to pay for them and the costs associated with maintaining them (such as a home).<\/li><li><strong>Discuss the importance of personal savings<\/strong> and how this can provide security for any future tough financial times.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Financial literacy is important for the entire family, especially if any member has fallen on difficult times. The sample consists of no less than 2,000 completed answers. Post-stratification weighting has been applied to ensure accurate and reliable representation of the total U.S. population ages 18 and older.
