The hope is that it will also help provide some financial support for the public and prevent a rise in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lexingtonlaw.com\/bad-credit\">bad credit<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The coronavirus outbreak has blindsided the American economy and left many people scrambling when it comes to paying student loans, credit card bills and basic living expenses. <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.transunion.com\/nearly-60-of-americans-say-household-income-negatively-impacted-by-covid-19\/?mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">TransUnion<\/a><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.transunion.com\/nearly-60-of-americans-say-household-income-negatively-impacted-by-covid-19\/?mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">\u00ae<\/a><\/sup> reported that nearly 60 percent of Americans have been affected financially by the pandemic.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s resulted in cut work hours, lost wages and hundreds of thousands of layoffs according to the <a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dol.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Department of Labor<\/a>. A recent Zest AI study found that 62 percent of Americans ages 18 to 44 are concerned about how COVID-19 will affect their credit scores.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The CARES Act might not stop negative credit reporting, but you can take a look at what it <em>is<\/em> doing to help Americans stabilize for the time being. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-does-the-cares-act-prevent-negative-credit-reporting\"><strong>Does the CARES Act Prevent Negative Credit Reporting?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>No, the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/116th-congress\/senate-bill\/3548\/text\" target=\"_blank\">CARES Act<\/a> doesn\u2019t stop negative reporting, though it could be a possibility in the future. The Senate Banking Committee and politicians such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harris.senate.gov\/news\/press-releases\/harris-outlines-priorities-for-third-coronavirus-response-package\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">California Senator Kamala Harris<\/a> are in favor of passing more legislation to protect individuals\u2019 credit scores and support those experiencing economic hardship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the meantime, the following modification to adverse credit reporting might be helpful for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-change-to-negative-credit-reporting\"><strong>A Change to Negative Credit Reporting<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Negative reporting might not be suspended, but the CARES Act does <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nolo.com\/legal-encyclopedia\/credit-protections-under-the-coronavirus-cares-act.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">adjust<\/a> how it works by amending the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you receive an accommodation for a loan because you\u2019re affected by the coronavirus pandemic, and if you were current on the account before you received the accommodation, your loan provider <strong>must continue to report your account as current.<\/strong> (It doesn\u2019t affect your account status if you were already delinquent on payments.) This can protect your credit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Accommodations can be any of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jdsupra.com\/legalnews\/the-cares-act-modifications-on-credit-71223\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">these things<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Partial payments<\/li><li>Deferred payments<\/li><li>Forbearance<\/li><li>Loan modifications<\/li><li>Any other assistance or relief<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Talk to your creditor or lender to learn about your options for accommodations, and don\u2019t change your payments until you have a written agreement that you have permission to do so.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-other-ways-the-cares-act-can-help-you\"><strong>Other Ways the CARES Act Can Help You<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to modifying how negative reporting works, the CARES Act also <a href=\"https:\/\/library.nclc.org\/major-consumer-protections-announced-response-covid-19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"provides  (opens in a new tab)\">provides <\/a>financial hardship assistance, temporary payment freezes and benefits to protect the public and their credit reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/8dIhglV03O4VcykECJWcuEByJPOeWy5evgrC6-BO58ouA2TZp6U7YbIV5AFciobbpYh8_MttLePCOFTgTXZBo_4i6kkR0443UIjgH2ka3dXvIFJGlwc65CXHK__u4J1GyaSNl5k\" alt=\"Graphic: What the CARES Act Does\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-federal-pandemic-unemployment-compensation\"><strong>Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation<\/strong><strong>:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Through July 31, 2020, approved applicants will receive an extra <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/federal-pandemic-unemployment-compensation-fpuc-definition-4802039\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">$600<\/a> of unemployment insurance funds. This includes qualified freelancers, furloughed workers and self-employed workers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For those that use all of their unemployment funds, the bill allows them to receive an extra 13 weeks of assistance and $600 in relief aid.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-does-this-help-you\"><strong>How Does This Help You?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>An additional 13 weeks of support and funds could help unemployed Americans meet monthly living expenses. Extended grace periods with participating companies can give the unemployed some breathing room when it comes to paying bills, which can be beneficial for their credit.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-temporary-student-loan-forgiveness\"><strong>Temporary Student Loan Forgiveness:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The CARES Act protects those that are&nbsp; by suspending payments and interest until September 30, 2020. For those that can make payments, the amounts are applied to their loan\u2019s principal balance. While private student loans are not included, lenders can opt to take part.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-does-this-help-you-1\"><strong>How Does This Help You?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Suspending student loan payments and interest rates will give borrowers time to recover, without defaulting and tarnishing their credit reports.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-small-business-paycheck-protection\"><strong>Small Business Paycheck Protection:<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2019, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/cdn.advocacy.sba.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/23142719\/2019-Small-Business-Profiles-US.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">30.7 million small businesses<\/a> were registered in the United States, with 5.9 million Americans on their payrolls. The CARES Act\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sbc.senate.gov\/public\/index.cfm\/guide-to-the-cares-act\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Small Business Association<\/a> (SBA) Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) ensures that approved businesses receive benefits and payroll funds. This enables small business owners to continue operating, maintain staff and manage other expenses.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Senate Committee released a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sbc.senate.gov\/public\/_cache\/files\/2\/9\/29fc1ae7-879a-4de0-97d5-ab0a0cb558c8\/1BC9E5AB74965E686FC6EBC019EC358F.the-small-business-owner-s-guide-to-the-cares-act-final-.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">guide<\/a> and list of requirements for qualifying, noting the following as potential candidates:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Entrepreneurs and sole proprietorships<\/li><li>Independent contractors<\/li><li>Tribal businesses<\/li><li>Employee-owned businesses and cooperatives<\/li><li>Businesses that operate with 500 or fewer employees in a single location<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-does-this-help-you-2\"><strong>How Does This Help You?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The PPP gives companies a temporary source of additional income. With <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/05\/14\/business\/economy\/coronavirus-unemployment-claims.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">more than 36 million people<\/a> applying for unemployment in the last two months, it\u2019s possible you\u2019ll have to wait more than six to eight weeks for your first check.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-are-companies-and-banks-helping-prevent-negative-credit\"><strong>Are Companies and Banks Helping Prevent Negative Credit?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The credit bureaus and the American government are not the only ones working to help the public. Mobile providers, banks and credit card companies are getting involved to help ease the financial burden.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/qbIG-XK4_5YOJ3fGW1hG7huBsyUoI7aNQuujFLjjyMMImQ8Wt_wIccN_SILbQcimbDtU25kRgSikf0V3OR-9rPRbkELahZR1RMsy-nBATHKr-dq7QmEZ8Nxdhnztxa3z3-YjbHsN3c8LvQ8Q\" alt=\"Graphic: Mobile service providers, banks and credit lenders are waiving late fees, lowering interest rates, and extending payment grace periods.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-mobile-providers\"><strong>Mobile Providers<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With so many Americans working from home, internet and mobile network usage are at all-time highs. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/about.att.com\/pages\/COVID-19.html\" target=\"_blank\">AT&amp;T<\/a><sup>\u24c7<\/sup>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verizonwireless.com\/support\/covid-19-faqs\/\">Verizon<\/a><sup>\u24c7<\/sup> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.t-mobile.com\/brand\/ongoing-updates-covid-19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">T-Mobile<\/a><sup>\u24c7<\/sup> are working to keep networks streamlined and running. They are also temporarily suspending account terminations and waiving late fees.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>AT&amp;T is offering qualifying schools 60 days of unlimited data and mobile hotspots.&nbsp;<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.verizon.com\/support\/covid-19-faqs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Verizon is waiving<\/a> late fees and offering unlimited domestic calling.&nbsp;<\/li><li><a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.t-mobile.com\/brand\/ceo-update-covid-19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">T-Mobile is working<\/a> to increase its network capacity for the next 60 days.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-banks-and-credit-card-companies\"><strong>Banks and Credit Card Companies<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The United States Chamber of Commerce is encouraging banks to help consumers during the coronavirus pandemic. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dfs.ny.gov\/reports_and_publications\/press_releases\/pr202003241\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">New York Department of Financial Services<\/a> now requires all banks in the state to provide financial support to patrons impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Major credit card companies are doing their part by creating financial hardship programs for consumers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.americanexpress.com\/us\/customer-service\/financial-hardship.html\" target=\"_blank\">American Express<\/a> has a program that temporarily lowers interest rates and monthly payments.&nbsp;<\/li><li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.wf.com\/press-release\/corporate-and-financial\/wells-fargo-announces-aid-customers-and-communities-impacted\">Wells Fargo Foundation<\/a> donated $175 million to help with food, housing and small business stability.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Apple Card\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/HT211098\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Customer Assistance Program<\/a> allows users to skip one monthly payment.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Be sure to contact your mobile provider and financial lenders to learn about their financial hardship programs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-the-irs-doing-to-help\"><strong>What Is the IRS Doing to Help?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The<strong> <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/newsroom\/payment-deadline-extended-to-july-15-2020\">IRS<\/a> has extended the filing deadline for 2019 income taxes to July 15, 2020. Interest from unpaid balances will be frozen until the new deadline.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the extended grace period, the IRS is backed up and taking longer to send refund checks. Many Americans depend on the funds to make bill payments. It\u2019s time to get strategic about your finances. Check with your credit card lenders, banks and loan collectors to better understand their policies about accommodations during COVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-protect-your-credit-score-during-the-coronavirus\"><strong>How to Protect Your Credit Score During the Coronavirus<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Obtaining credit fraud protection is one of the best ways to protect your credit report. You can request free copies of your TransUnion<sup>\u24c7<\/sup>, Equifax<sup>\u24c7<\/sup> and Experian<sup>\u24c7<\/sup> reports from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.annualcreditreport.com\/index.action\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">AnnualCreditReport.com<\/a>. This will allow you to track your accounts, identify errors and note other fraudulent activities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, there has been an increase in cybersecurity hacks and financial fraud. The <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.us-cert.gov\/ncas\/alerts\/aa20-099a\" target=\"_blank\">United States Department of Homeland Security<\/a> released a warning about these malicious attacks. Enabling credit locks, credit freezes and fraud alerts could help protect you.
