Contrasting Different Credit Repair Services

"We'll repair your credit for free", "Honest answers from someone who cares about your credit", "Increase your credit score 60 points in 30 days, guaranteed"… those are just a few of the dozens of sales pitches you will get when searching for credit repair options. If you search for "credit repair services" online, you will find the Internet is filled with companies that "guarantee" they will fix your bad credit at little or no cost to you. Then you dig a little deeper and find websites that advise you against using these quick-fix repair services and, instead, show you how to fix your credit report on your own. The amount of information available on cleaning up your credit report is overwhelming and often so confusing you don't know where to begin.

If you are researching ways to clean up your credit report, it is likely because you have a credit score you want to improve. This score is a reflection of how you manage your finances and whether you pay your bills on time, and creditors and insurance companies make judgments about you based on your credit score. Therefore, increasing your credit score may be able to save you hundreds, even thousands, of dollars in interest over the life of mortgage loans, car loans, and credit card interest rates.

As with most things in life, doing the work yourself will save you from having to pay someone else to do it for you. And there are so many websites and books available that give you step-by-step instructions on how to clean up your credit report on your own.

So with instructions in hand, you take on the task of raising your credit score by yourself. The first step in raising your score is to know what is on your credit report and why it is lower that you would like. Begin by requesting a copy of your credit report from each of the three major credit bureaus. Once you have the copies, you can then highlight any negative listings that are pulling down your credit score. Removing the questionable negative listings is your goal; getting rid of the negatives will improve your report and usually raises your credit score.

In order to remove these questionable, negative listings, you will need to gather back-up to support your argument, and then begin the tedious task of making copies, writing letters, crossing your fingers, and waiting for a response. It is not unusual to get a less than favorable response on your first attempt, which means you will need to repeat the process again in hopes of receiving a positive reply the next time around. Be prepared to be persistent.

Furthermore, not all questionable listings will require the same approach, so you will also want to familiarize yourself with the various credit repair methods you can use to ensure you are fighting the battle on all fronts.

After several unsuccessful attempts to resolve your credit report issues through letter writing, you may feel discouraged and a bit in over your head. Your next step may be to turn to the credit repair software packages in hopes that they will provide you with the tools you may be lacking. There are many kits and software packages on the market today and most present themselves as the simple, easy way to manage your credit, while giving you the expertise used by professional credit repair services.
