Payment history (35%)

A history of credit and account usage. This category helps lenders understand how you handle financial responsibility. Paying your bills on time and repairing your credit may strengthen your payment history.

Credit utilization (30%)

This category is a ratio of current debt compared to your credit limit. For example, if your total debt equals $5,000 and your credit limit is $10,000, your utilization ratio is 50%. Generally, try to maintain a 25% or less ratio.

Credit age (15%)

Experience is valuable in the credit scoring business. This category measures the total time you’ve had access to credit, and the older your accounts, the better. That’s why keeping old accounts open, active and positive is usually a good idea.

New inquiries (10%)

Allowing others to access your credit report to qualify for a new credit card or loan is called a credit inquiry, which may temporarily lower your credit score. Too many inquiries make you appear reliant on credit, a reputation you want to avoid.

Credit mix (10%)

This category measures your experience with various credit types. Generally, lenders like to see a good variety of loan types, from credit cards to installment loans.
